Popular Browser Add-On WoT Pulled After Being Caught Selling Browsing Histories

Popular Browser Add-On WoT Pulled After Being Caught Selling Browsing Histories

  • Web of Trust is a popular website reputation and review service
  • Browser add-on was available for Firefox, Chrome, and other browsers
  • WoT says it will release an updated add-on that complies with regulations

A popular browser add-on has been pulled after investigation showed it was selling users’ browsing history to third parties, data that was not sufficiently anonymised. Web of Trust Services is a website reputation and review service that uses crowdsourcing to assign trust and reliability ratings. With the word ‘trust’ in its name, it’s disturbing that the service itself ended up failing the trust of its users.

German television broadcaster Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR) in an investigative report last week claimed that the Web of Trust (WoT) add-on, which was available for Firefox, Opera, Chrome, Internet Explorer, and Safari, was being used to gather and sell the browsing history of users.

The NDR report also claimed that the browsing history data being sold to third parties by WoT was not anonymised enough to prevent identification of users, and even revealed related information. NDR said it was able to identify more than 50 users from the sample data it had acquired from a third-party, and that details like ongoing police investigations and sexual orientation were also obtained in some cases.

Mozilla was the first to pull the WoT add-on from its add-on store for Firefox, after receiving complaints from users. WoT in a statement to The Register said it had pulled its add-on from other platforms like Chrome and Opera, and that it was going to release an updated add-on that complies with all regulations after taking “appropriate measures”. The service, which also sells WoT apps for Android and iOS, claims that its software has been downloaded by over 140 million users.

WoT said that while it takes great effort to remove any identifying data from the browsing history it sells, “it appears in some cases such identification remained possible, albeit for a very small number of WoT users.” It says it will in the future provide the option to users to keep their data private while still remaining a part of the WoT community and using its service, adding that it hopes to regain the trust of its users.

CyanogenMod 14.1 Nightly Builds Based on Android 7.1 Nougat Released for Select Devices

CyanogenMod 14.1 Nightly Builds Based on Android 7.1 Nougat Released for Select Devices
Android 7.1 Nougat-based CyanogenMod 14.1 rolling out to select devices
Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X will receive the update first
The nightly build has few features missing
The CyanogenMod community has announced that a nightly build of CM14.1 based on Android 7.1 Nougat has been rolled out to select devices. The community members announced that the nightly build will be pushed first to few devices, and later other devices will get the update too.

CyanogenMod 14.1 nightly build is available for the Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, Xiaomi Mi 3, Xiaomi Mi 4, LG G3, Moto G variants, LG G4, Samsung Galaxy S5, OnePlus 3, and ZenFone 2 users. A nightly build is usually not a stable build, but is still released to all users, and usually is plagued with several bugs.

Elaborating on the CM14.1 nightly build, founder Steve Kondik said in the blog post, “Bug reports are OK, but please don’t file bugs for missing features since this is all a work in progress. Now is a great time to get involved with the project too- CM is returning to its community-driven roots and there are endless ways to help out. As always, more devices will be added to the list over the coming weeks and maintainers bring everything up to date, so if you don’t see your device listed here just give us a bit of time.”

The nightly builds of CM14.1 are available for users to download here. Kondik also notes that all the features will not be made available right away on the nightly build (for example Themes are missing), but will be eventually rolled out in future updates.

Samsung Galaxy S8 Tipped to Launch on February 26 Again; Specifications Leaked

Samsung Galaxy S8 Tipped to Launch on February 26 Again; Specifications Leaked

  • Chinese tipster claims Galaxy S8 will launch on February 26
  • Galaxy S8 rumoured to go on sale from March 2017
  • It is said to pack 6GB of RAM

Samsung’s next flagship smartphone, Galaxy S8, is the company’s best shot at regaining the trust of its customers after the debacle that was the Galaxy Note 7. Rumours so far have claimed that Samsung will launch the alleged Galaxy S8 flagship smartphone on the side-lines of MWC 2017 in Barcelona on February 26. Now, a phone tipster from China has also claimed the same launch day for the Samsung Galaxy S8. Additionally, the tipster adds that the handset will go on sale from March.

According to leaked details on Weibo, the Galaxy S8 will feature a 5.5-inch 4K (2160×3840 pixels) Super Amoled display and will boast of an impressive pixel density of 806ppi. The tipster adds that the Galaxy S8 will be powered by the company’s in-house Exynos 8895 SoC. Much like some recent high-end smartphones, the Galaxy S8 is also said to sport massive 6GB of RAM. Notably, Samsung’s Galaxy S8 won’t be the company’s first smartphone featuring 6GB of RAM as the Galaxy C9 Pro was recently unveiled with the same memory.A previous report claimed that the Galaxy S8 will come with 16-megapixel and 8-megapixel dual-rear camera setup. The camera on the Galaxy S8 is believed to click decent images in low-light. The Samsung Galaxy S8 is also said to get rid of the signature home button seen on earlier flagship Galaxy phones. Other changes expected on the smartphone include bezel-less design. There are rumours that suggest Samsung is working on a new design where the front with no home button will be filled with all glass and will also incorporate fingerprint-sensing display.

However, a recent report suggested that Samsung Galaxy S8 was reportedly delayed by two weeks as engineers were working to find Galaxy Note 7 fault.

Google Pixel XL Has Similar Cost-to-Price Ratio as iPhone 7 Plus, Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge

Google Pixel XL Has Similar Cost-to-Price Ratio as iPhone 7 Plus, Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge

  • Google profits $485.35 per Pixel XL model, according to IHS
  • The highest costing component is the display
  • Google’s camera cost is lesser than Apple’s camera component cost

Google with its Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones is looking to do what Apple has been doing for years – integrate in-house software and hardware to build a pure-experience smartphone. Leveraging from its Android fan base, Google aims to provide the best Android experience with top-notch hardware. Hence, the pricing of the smartphone is at par with other premium handsets, if not more. Now, IHS Markit has torn down the Pixel XL alongside a complete bill of materials (BOM), and reports that the cost-to-sales-price ratio is similar to the Apple iPhone 7 Plus and Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.

IHS Markit claims the 32GB Pixel XL smartphones has a total bill of materials cost of $285.75. However the tech giant charges $769 for it, gaining a maximum profit margin of $485.35 per model. The report states that this pricing point directly competes with top-end flagships.

What’s more interesting is the fact that Google makes more margin on the Pixel XL than Apple does on the iPhone 7 ($424), going by the data IHS Markit released for the latest iPhone in September. Of course, this is before the marketing, distribution and other costs are involved. More importantly, the Pixel XL has a 5.5-inch screen and a bigger body, which would mean that its bill of materials would likely be slightly more than the similar costs for iPhone 7, which has a 4.7-inch display and smaller screen.

Senior director of cost benchmarking for IHS Markit, Andrew Rassweiler said in the report, “The Pixel clearly targets the same top-end flagship space occupied by the Apple iPhone and top-end Samsung Galaxy lines, with retail pricing points that directly compete with these products.”This high profit margin clearly hints at the company’s level of trust on its Pixel phones, and is looking to battle Apple and Samsung head-on in the profit market. Rassweiler also notes that Google is getting the components at the same price as other big manufacturers in the market.

The report states that the highest costing component of the Pixel phones is the display that it buys from Samsung for $58. The Gorilla Glass 4 and aluminium enclosure costs $35, and the camera is claimed to cost $17.50. The report states that Apple spends $19 for the iPhone 7’s camera system.

The profit margin is however much lesser than what the BOM suggests. The margin doesn’t include internal development, software optimisation, R&D, marketing and other supply costs. Google is spending a lot on advertising the smartphones online and offline around the world. It is leveraging from its search engine service, and is pushing pop-ups ads on the Google homepage as well.

Just like Foxconn assembles Apple’s iPhone, HTC is doing the same work for Google. The executives take the reins when it came to designing and engineering, and HTC just worked on Google’s orders to deliver the finished product.

How to Convert Videos on a Mac to the Right Format for Different Devices

Did you know that different devices tend to be able to only play certain types of videos? If you’ve ever had trouble playing a video on a particular device then that is probably the reason why – and the way to get around that is to make sure that you convert your videos to the right format for the device you’re using.

To do so you will need to first know what formats are compatible with your devices – which is often a bit trickier than it sounds. If you only use one or two devices then it shouldn’t be an issue – but if you use more than that then it can be difficult to keep track of which format you should use for each device.

One way to simplify all of that is by using Movavi Video Converter for Mac. If you want to convert a video to a different format using it then you need only add the video, select a format, and click on the ‘Convert’ button to get started.

However what makes Movavi Video Converter for Mac perfect for converting videos to the right format for different devices are the hundreds of presets that are built in to it. Each of these presets is designed to use the best possible video format and settings for a particular device or platform – and includes support for mobile devices as well as video sharing or social media platforms.

In short all you will have to do is pick the preset that corresponds to the device (or platform) that you want to use, and let Movavi Video Converter for Mac handle the rest automatically. That makes it a lot easier than having to remember the compatibility of different devices and formats.

Additionally it is worth noting that Movavi Video Converter for Mac also has numerous other features that may prove invaluable in some cases. It can convert image and audio files, create animated GIFs, cut and join video segments, enhance video quality, extract audio tracks, add captions, and much more.

Essentially Movavi Video Converter for Mac will be able to carry out most of the common tasks that involve videos – and then some. Even putting that aside, its ability to help simplify the task of converting videos for various devices will make it an invaluable addition to your software library.

Microsoft Opens Cybersecurity Engagement Centre in India

Image result for Microsoft Opens Cybersecurity Engagement Centre in India

At a time when governments the world over are struggling to tackle cyber-attacks and data breach, technology giant Microsoft India on Friday launched a full-scale Cybersecurity Engagement Centre (CSEC) in India.

After a successful year-long pilot – the centre is India’s first and Microsoft’s seventh Cybersecurity Centre globally – opened at a juncture when over three million debit cards of various banks are believed to be ‘tainted’ following a suspected security breach in the country.

“We believe security of critical information is imperative for our corporate customers, just as it is vital to ensure security and privacy of citizen data and transactions. Our first investment towards this was setting up our local data centres in India and the Cybersecurity Engagement Centre is the second,” Bhaskar Pramanik, Chairman, Microsoft India, told reporters in New Delhi.

Microsoft’s strategy is to provide protection across all end-points – from sensors to the data centre, detection of attack using targeted signals, behavioural monitoring and machine learning – and eventually closing the gap between discovery and action taken to neutralise the attack.

According to the leading software security group Kaspersky Lab, India is among the top five countries in the world to be attacked by ransomware – malware that forces its victims to pay a ransom through certain online payment methods to regain their data.

In the last 12 months, Microsoft’s cyber-security management team met with over 100 organisations in the country to understand what plagued them.

“The team observed three common IT issues plaguing them that include unmanaged and unregulated IT assets usage, procurement and maintenance, poor knowledge of cyber hygiene among users withing organisations and inability of companies to timely monitor, detect and remove cyber threats,” the company said.

The CSEC will bring together Microsoft and its partners to identify and respond to cyber threats in the country.

“As governments and enterprise embrace digital transformation and strive for resilience, a holistic and agile security platform is ever more critical. This is where Microsoft’s unique threat intelligence innovations and trusted cloud ecosystem offer them powerful protection against security threats,” added Madhu Khatri, Associate General Counsel of Microsoft India.

In addition to enabling and empowering enterprises to manage modern security threats effectively, the CSEC aims to expand Microsoft’s public-private partnerships in India.

“This will build on the momentum in the last few years, where the Microsoft Digital Crimes Unit (DCU) has fostered various partnerships with public sector and enforcement agencies globally. Microsoft’s Digital Crimes Unit (DCU) seeks to build trust by fighting global malware, reducing digital risk and protecting vulnerable populations,” Microsoft said in a statement.

“The DCU does this by combining big data analytics, cutting-edge forensics and novel legal strategies. This includes strategic collaboration with Interpol in global malware botnet disruption operations and a PhotoDNA licensing collaboration to support Interpol’s efforts in preventing child sexual exploitation online, as well as cyber threat intelligence sharing partnerships with several Internet Service Providers in the region and government Computer Emergency Response Teams (CERTs),” the statement added.

The centre will also enable customers tap into a pool of resources such as security specialists and technologies at Microsoft.

As part of Microsoft Consultancy Services (MCS), a dedicated India-based response team will offer security consultancy services to enterprise customers. “The MCS team works closely with enterprises to understand their business goals, challenges and technical maturity to develop enterprise security strategies and empower them through their critical digital transformation,” Microsoft added.

Microsoft has also rolled out Microsoft Secure, a nationwide campaign to increase awareness on cyber-security to help organisations understand their security requirements better.

“Through its three-pronged approach of comprehensive platform, unique intelligence and partnerships, Microsoft is aiming to drive educational sessions and coaching sessions with enterprises in the country,” the statement added.

Google Pixel and Pixel XL Will Start Shipping in India on October 25

Image result for Google Pixel and Pixel XL Will Start Shipping in India on October 25It came as a delight when Google announced that India will be one of the few countries where its Pixel smartphone duo will be launched. Following that, it was just a week ago when Google’s recently launched flagship smartphones Pixel and Pixel XL went up for pre-orders in India via major retailers like Flipkart, Chroma, Reliance Digital, and others. However, it was not revealed when the smartphones will finally hit the shelves, but not the wait is over. The search giant has announced that the Google Pixel and Google Pixel XL will start shipping on October 25.

Google India on Saturday in a tweet said “The future is exciting. And by future we mean 3 days from now. #Pixel will start reaching stores on 25th October #madebygoogle”. To recall, Google launched its Pixel smartphones at its October 4 event, along with a slew of other gadgets. At the event, Google also revealed that India will be one of the first six countries including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and Germany to see the Pixel smartphones reaching the markets. Unfortunately, Google’s yet impressive Really Blue colour variant of Pixel won’t be available in India, while the Quite Black and Very Silver will ship starting Tuesday.

In other news, while the Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones are yet to start shipping in India, we already have received the teardown details of the larger variant Pixel XL, courtesy iFixit. As per the full teardown, the AMOLED display packed in the smartphone is a Samsung manufactured display (part number AMS546KD09). Samsung has also given its UFS 2.0 internal flash storage RAM in the phone. The touchscreen controller comes from Synaptics (ClearPad S3708) and surprisingly enough, it’s just the battery that bears an HTC moniker.

We have already learnt that HTC is the commercial manufacturer of the Pixel and Pixel XL, just like Apple has Foxconn as its manufacturer for the iPhone. Summing up the whole procedure of teardown,iFixit gave Google Pixel XL a score of 6 out of 10 in terms of repairability, which is one point lower than the iPhone 7 Plus.

The Pixel 32GB variant will cost you Rs. 57,000 while the Pixel XL 32GB will sell at Rs. 67,000. The 128GB variants are priced a bit higher at Rs. 66,000 for Pixel and Rs. 76,000 for Pixel XL.

The festive season is going on in India, and major e-retailers are giving good discounts as well as offers on various products. Apple’s recently launched iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus too entered India earlier this month with a bunch of discounts and offers being available via almost all e-commerce companies and offline retailers as well. Samsung is still struggling with its Galaxy Note 7 fiasco with the device that could not even land in India. With Pixel and Pixel XL, Google is also eyeing to dominate the Indian smartphone market this Diwali.

Talking about the specifications of the first Android 7.1-running smartphone, the Pixel and Pixel XL are almost identical. The display size, of course, is different on both the devices – Pixel has a 5-inch full-HD display while the Pixel XL has a 5.5-inch QHD display. The Pixel packs a 2770mAh battery, whereas the Pixel XL has a 3450mAh battery inside. Other specifications on the Pixel smartphones include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor, 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM, Pixel Imprint fingerprint sensor, 12.3-megapixel rear cameras with a Sony IMX378 sensor, and an 8-megapixel front camera with a Sony IMX179 sensor.
